He explained that some Democratic lawmakers appeared to glance at one another before reacting, as if seeking approval or direction. According to Vance, this suggested hesitation to respond independently to the president’s remarks.
Vance also noted that a small number of Democrats did clap briefly but chose not to stand. He suggested this may reflect concerns about political backlash, particularly from more progressive factions within their party. In his view, this created an atmosphere where members were reluctant to show even limited agreement.
The same pattern continued when the president introduced invited guests, many of whom were recognized for notable achievements. Applause from the Democratic side was often restrained or delayed, adding to the perception of hesitation.
Vance argued that the issue went beyond political disagreement, framing it as a lack of willingness to act on personal conviction. He suggested that lawmakers were relying on group signals rather than individual judgment.
He added that this dynamic could have broader political implications, particularly as the country approaches future elections, where party unity and voter perception may play a significant role.
