Venezuelan Migrant Arrested After Chicago Student Fatally Shot Near Campus

Chicago lakefront police after fatal shooting

A tragic shooting occurred early Thursday morning along Chicago’s lakefront, leaving 18-year-old Loyola University Chicago student Sheridan Gorman dead. Gorman, a resident of Westchester County, New York, was walking with friends shortly after 1:30 a.m. when a masked gunman fired, striking her in the head. She died at the scene.

Police have taken a 25-year-old man into custody in connection with the shooting. The Chicago Tribune reports that a “distinct limp” helped authorities identify the suspect within minutes, though officials have not confirmed whether formal charges have been filed.

In a message to students, Loyola University Chicago President Mark C. Reed expressed deep sorrow over the loss. “It is with profound sadness that I write to share that one of our students, Sheridan Gorman, was killed earlier today. This is a tragic loss, and our hearts go out to Sheridan’s family, loved ones, and all who knew her,” he said.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had filed an arrest detainer for the suspect, requesting local officials to prevent his release. DHS officials emphasized the importance of enforcing arrest warrants for individuals with prior criminal records.

Sheridan Gorman’s death has sparked national attention, raising questions about public safety and enforcement policies. ICE data reviewed by The New York Times shows that nationwide arrest rates have increased this year, with more than 1,100 daily arrests on average, highlighting variations in enforcement across different regions.

Authorities continue investigating the incident. Meanwhile, Loyola University and local law enforcement are providing support to students and community members affected by the tragedy.
