Most House Dems Vote Against Crackdown On Foreign Influence In US Schools

US House vote on foreign influence school bills

The U.S. House of Representatives passed two bills aimed at limiting foreign influence in American schools, with both measures receiving bipartisan support despite significant opposition from most Democrats. More than 160 House Democrats voted against the legislation, while a smaller group joined Republicans in backing the proposals.

One of the bills, introduced by Rep. Kevin Hern of Oklahoma, seeks to block federal funding for elementary and secondary schools that participate in programs or activities financed by the Chinese government. The measure also restricts funding for schools that receive direct or indirect support from individuals or organizations connected to the Chinese government. It passed by a vote of 247–166, with 33 Democrats supporting it.

The second bill, sponsored by Rep. Aaron Bean of Florida, requires public schools to inform parents of their right to request information about any foreign involvement in their child’s education. This notification would be handled through local education agencies, such as school districts or boards. The measure passed 247–164, again with 33 Democrats voting in favor.

Democratic leaders and many members raised concerns about the scope and clarity of the legislation. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries emphasized the importance of focusing on core educational priorities such as reading, writing, and critical thinking. Other lawmakers questioned how schools would determine what qualifies as foreign influence and whether the measures could lead to unintended consequences.

The issue of foreign involvement in U.S. education has drawn attention in recent years, particularly regarding programs linked to China, such as Confucius Institutes. Critics argue these initiatives may influence academic content, while others caution against broad policies that could affect legitimate cultural exchange programs.
