White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized several Democrats following the State of the Union address delivered by Donald Trump, claiming their reaction during the speech revealed deep political divisions over immigration and public safety. Leavitt argued that the president intentionally highlighted sensitive issues during the address, creating what she described as a political “trap” that exposed the opposing party’s stance.
During the speech, Trump recognized victims of crimes involving illegal immigrants, including the family of Iryna Zarutska. Her mother was honored in the chamber as the president discussed the circumstances surrounding Zarutska’s death. Leavitt said that some Democratic lawmakers choosing not to stand during the moment demonstrated, in her view, a lack of support for victims affected by crimes tied to illegal immigration.
Leavitt also referenced Dalilah Coleman, who suffered long-term brain damage after a crash involving a truck driver who was reportedly in the country illegally. She argued that such cases illustrate the consequences of immigration policies implemented during the administration of Joe Biden. According to Leavitt, those policies allowed millions of migrants to cross into the United States without proper legal status.
The address also included a tribute to Erika Kirk, the widow of Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk, though the recognition of crime victims sparked the most political controversy. Inside the chamber, tensions increased as several Democratic lawmakers protested or left the speech early. Hakeem Jeffries attempted to maintain order while Representatives Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar criticized the president during the confrontation.
